Overview

The life expectancy of endoscopes varies greatly depending on care and handling practices within each facility. Proper care and handling starts with an understanding of endoscope construction, and recognition of potential damage. In this independent study education activity, learners will review the environment of the flexible endoscope, including everyday handling practices. If the actions, environment and people that contribute to unnecessary wear can be identified, then instituting a plan to minimize scope damage will increase efficiency. Learners will learn how to prevent damage from everyday use, thus extending the life of the scope and ensuring the safety of the patient. It is further expected that participants completing this eLearning activity will feel empowered to be an advocate for equipment and environmental safety in the Endoscopy Suite.

Target Audience

This online independent study is intended primarily for RNs with a responsibility for or an interest in enhanced capability and extended life expectancy of flexible endoscopes. It will also be of interest to allied healthcare personnel and MDs involved in endoscopy.

Learner Objectives

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. List three safeguarding principles for endoscope storage.
  2. Discuss techniques to ensure safety for both the endoscope and the environment during transport and staging.
  3. Describe actions which will prevent potential problems of endoscope damage during cleaning and high-level disinfection.
  4. Analyze departmental policies, procedures and actions in order to improve the life expectancy of the endoscope.

Teaching Methodology

Participants will complete the web-based learning activity entitled “Evaluation of Your Endoscope’s Environment: Outcome-Oriented Process Improvement”. They will read the article, then register to take the post-test and complete the evaluation on the website. They will submit the documentation as directed. A printable Data Collection Tool is available for those who wish to evaluate their own department’s policies and procedures. A bibliographic reference is included for those wishing additional information.

Contact Hours

Upon completion of the entire program, achieving a passing grade of 80% on the post-test and submission of required documentation, participants will be granted 1 contact hour. No partial credit will be granted. Contact hours are available for this eLearning activity until 30 May 2019.

Accreditation

Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 08747, the District of Columbia Board of Nursing, Provider Number 50-574, the Florida Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 50-574, the Iowa Board of Nursing, Provider Number 317 and the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses, Provider Number WV97-0217RN.

It is the responsibility of the licensee to verify acceptance of contact hours for relicensure.

According to the criteria of the American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN), 1.0 hour earned in this activity is considered GI-Specific for the purposes of recertification by contact hours through ABCGN.

This program has been pre-approved by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) for 1 contact hour.

This program has been approved by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) for 1.0 contact hour.
